On this nostalgic and often wistful set, Dave Brubeck and his 1991
Quartet (clarinetist Bill Smith, bassist Jack Six and drummer Randy Jones) play eight songs from
the pianist's childhood, such numbers as "Shine on Harvest Moon," "Stardust" and "Among My Souvenirs"

ELLINGTON, MERCER & DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA
|
ONLY GOD CAN MAKE A TREE
|
22.06.96
|
This was the final project of Mercer Ellington who, even this late
in his life (within a year of his death), was unable (or unwilling) to escape from the shadow
of his father; he should at least have renamed his big band after himself

Duke Ellington made no studio recordings in 1948, which makes the concert
tapes from that year especially interesting. The Cornell University concert in December is especially
interesting in contrast to Ellington's sixth annual Carnegie Hall appearance

Collection of performances that skip around between 1955 and 1986.
Among the dozen selections on this CD are a couple of tunes by BG's 1955 combo with trumpeter
Ruby Braff, an example of the group he led briefly in 1959 with trombonist Bill Harris and Flip
Phillips's tenor, some okay big-band performances, Goodman's forgotten 1967 septet with trumpeter
Joe Newman and tenor-saxophonist Zoot Sims, and a version of "Blue Room" played by his last band,
Goodman's 1986 orchestra

2CD Goodman combos are featured: a fine ten-piece unit from 1959-60
that includes trumpeter Jack Sheldon, trombonist Bill Harris and Flip Phillips on tenor, and an
otherwise totally unrecorded sextet from 1963. The latter not only features cornetist Bobby Hackett
and the young bassist Steve Swallow but the forgotten Modesto Bresano, who contributes some fine
tenor and flute

JAZZANTIQUA
|
02.11.96
|
The group Jazzantiqua back in 1983 sought to combine together Baroque
music with jazz, driven by the fact that when Baroque music was first performed, it often contained
improvisation. Frederic Hand is heard on guitar, lute, and the vihuela (a Spanish guitar of the
16th century), performing original works that utilize Baroque-era themes and unusual arrangements
that are somewhat thought-provoking (even if they were ultimately not influential at all)

2CD Al Kooper solo project, and a career reconsideration and retrospective,
but it's also damn close to definitive as a document of the Blues Project and the original Blood,
Sweat & Tears as well. At three February 1994 gigs at New York's Bottom Line, Kooper got together
the original members of both bands (with BS&T billed as "Child Is Father to the Man") and
his own Rekooperators, including John Simon and Harvey Brooks, with John Sebastian sitting in
on harmonica, to perform new versions of 33 years' worth of repertory

in early 1995 found him a weakened player, utilizing a second keyboardist on most selections,
but still a powerful singer. McCann and his Magic Band are augmented by a quite a few notable
guests on this set, including pianist George Duke, guitarist Dori Caymmi, organist Billy Preston,
guitarist David T. Walker and tenorman Ernie Watts; steel drummer Andy Narell

Trumpeter Marvin Stamm, rather than drag out the usual bebop standards,
mostly introduces new material on his CD. Four songs are played by Berg's quartet with pianist

of those songs, three find Bob Malach (on tenor and soprano) making the band a sextet
