4-CD; On this four-CD set
are included the bulk of Nat King Cole's radio transcriptions of 1941 and
1944-45. Although the programming could be a little better (the complete
sessions are not compiled strictly in chronological order), the music has a
strong unity and is consistently enjoyable. Pianist-vocalist Cole and his
trio (which also includes important contributions by guitarist Oscar Moore
and either Johnny Miller or Wesley Prince on bass) are featured extensively
both as a unit and as an accompanying group to singers Anita Boyer, Ida
James, Anita O'Day and the Barrie Sisters on 33, 15, five and five songs
respectively. There are 120 selections altogether (some are quite brief)
including two six-song instrumental medleys that put the emphasis on Cole's
piano playing |

JENSEN, JOHN |
TREASURY OF MAINSTREAM JAZZ
PIANO |
15.01.99 |
John Jensen is a classical
jazz pianist who on this solo CD explores ten jazz standards, plus his own
blues, "Don't Cross Lowell." Jensen is a melodic player with plenty
of technique, although he sometimes sounds as if jazz were his second language.
His versions of Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby," "Don't Get
Around Much Anymore," "My Foolish Heart," and even Ornette
Coleman's "The Sphinx" are well played if not particularly
memorable. His interpretations generally swing and are logical outgrowths of
the melody, with his own musical personality being secondary compared to the
tunes themselves. The music on this little-known CD is reasonably enjoyable,
just not all that substantial or essential |

Kevin Norton's 1999 album,
"Knots", marks his debut as a band leader, playing his own
compositions as well as those of Thelonious Monk. Like Monk, Norton's playing
and composition emphasizes rhythm, but the clean, spare lines of his playing
and his improvisational skills have their own distinctive flair. Songs like
the title track and "3 Movements" are open to many interpretations
and offer new aspects each time they are heard |
