LABO7003.2	Shines,Johnny	Too Wet to Plow	26.06.01	Recorded in Edmonton, Canada in 1975 and reissued on CD by Concord Jazz's Blues Alliance label in 1996, Too Wet to Plow finds Shines in excellent form. His solid accompaniment includes harmonica player Sugar Blue and bassist Ron Rault, as well as guitarist/singer Louisiana Red (a superb bluesman who isn't nearly as well known as he should be), and Shines clearly has a strong rapport with them on "Red Sun," "Traveling Back Home" and other highly personal originals.
LABO7034.2	Stadler,Heiner	Retrospective	21.05.02	FREE JAZZ; This CD is comprised of six songs taken from five separate sessions. "The Fugue #2" from December 1966 has some surprisingly adventurous solos from a sextet that includes trumpeter Jimmy Owens, tenor saxophonist Joe Farrell and trombonist Garnett Brown, a similar group from October 1973 (with Tyrone Washington in Farrell's place) is heard on "Pointed" and guitarist Mark Elf is featured solo and in a duet with drummer Brian Brake on two versions of "Moving Toward You." Most remarkable is Dee Dee Bridgewater's hair-raising vocal on "Love in the Middle of the Air" which she performs in duet with bassist Reggie Workman; however this 16-minute exercise in getting the maximum use out of a minimum of words only really needs to be heard once
LABO7024.2	Stadler,Heiner	Jazz Alchemy	26.09.00	FREE JAZZ; Most of these abstract pieces by Heiner Stadler were originally recorded and released back in the 1970s. Stadler doesn't play on them, leaving that task to some of the finest avant-garde jazzers. The "Jazz Alchemy" suite, in six parts, is performed by trumpeter Charles McGhee, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Brian Brake.
