BIBB, LEON & ERIC

A FAMILY AFFAIR

21.11.02

A FAMILY AFFAIR re-unites Eric Bibb with his father Leon Bibb. This is not only a match made in heaven, but presumably also a pairing that was top priority on both menТs list of musical projects. Leon Bibb is an accomplished singer and actor in his own right and a living legend to those familiar with the history of the New York folk scene. Leon Bibb was an influential presence on that scene in the 50s and 60s. Naturally, this is also the social and musical background Eric Bibb was born and raised in. A FAMILY AFFAIR brings these two American voices together on record for the very first time. They have crafted and recorded new music that is truly inspirational

SPINE

26.01.98

This album Veda Hille proves she has plenty of backbone. While more and more female singer/songwriter bow to the successful style of Sheryl Crow of Alanis Morrisette, the young Canadian has stayed true to her own unique creative powers overflowing with ideas. Exitingly uncompromising, she gives her musical and lyrical imagination complete freedom. From the heartfelt piano ballad it is just a short hop to the harsh, rocking break out. The trained pianist utilises her acoustic four-stringed guitar several times. Cello, loops and oriental drums are used just as much as trumpets, double bass an a singing saw

HILLE, VEDA

WOMEN IN (E)MOTION

25.11.96

Two more studio records have been released in Canada, where she has come to be known as one of the most talented songwriters of the younger generation. Her first European performance at the "women in (e)motion festival" - both solo and with band - did more than justice to her reputation

HOOSEGOW

MIGHTY

07.12.96

Elliot Sharp is perhaps best known for his musical/scientific exploration of noise extremes: from the group Carbon to experimental dance music with Philorene and innumerable musical alliances in-between. And now Hoosegow, a walk along the path towards the origins of American music. A collection of (half) acoustic blues numbers, delivered by the impressive duo of Elliot Sharp (guitar) and Queen Esther (vocals)

KAPPES, HILDE

LANDSCAPES OF A VOICE

14.09.98

Born in 1964 on the Moselle River, sang as a child in the church choir and started playing the piano, later studied music-education in Vienna, performed lieder evenings and sang in various jazz and improvisational groups. Her first success was in Berlin in the 90Сs with a solo program which could not be forced into any existing category. On "Landscapes of a Voice" she takes the time to create moods and explore them Ч painting delicate, undramatic landscapes with rolling hills, gently waving grass Ч an expansive world full of flowing contrasts

KELLY, JO ANN

WOMEN IN (E)MOTION

02.12.95

The legendary blues singer's spirt also filled the hall during her performance at the women in (e)motion festival, 1988, in a double concert with Rory Block. Only a few weeks after the concert she suddenly began to suffer the symptoms of a serious illness, a brain tumor which was then surgically removed. At first she seemed to be cured. She gave the type of first-class concerts she was known for. Her last performance in early September 1990 came at the end of a long tour with her brother Dave. A joint album was also in the planning. Jo Ann Kelly's premature and unexpected death was an immense loss for the blues world. This live recording should, above all, serve to keep alive the memory of this wonderful personality who embodied the blues with so much ability, respect, and humanity

MAHAL, TAJ

AN EVENING OF ACOUSTIC MU

17.10.94

This CD was recorded at a solo concert in Bremen on October 6 th 1993. Here you can experience a pure and fascinating musician. Mahal was not entirely solo at the concert since tuba player Howard Johnson supported him on some numbers. A greatly sti-mulating musical combination which stirred memories of Mahal's tuba pro-ect of the seventies

MCILWAINE, ELLEN

WOMEN IN (E)MOTION

08.06.98

The young guitar player and singer made initial contact with the rock scene in the mid-1960s. Ellen McIlwaine, the adopted daughter of American missionaries, grew up in Japan. There she first learned piano like a good girl but was soon susceptible to the rolling groove of Fats Domino and the sheer energy of Ray Charles. With the move back to the US South, to Atlanta, Georgia, and a guitar bought cheap she dove into the world of blues, soul, funk and R&B that surrounded her there . The foundation for a big start in rock had been laid. 1966 found the furious slide guitar player, who considers Johnny Winter a trail-blazing influence, drawn to Now York. She performed in clubs with big names like Muddy Waters and played several times with Jimi Hendrix, who took her under his wing. But the path through the labyrinth of the booming rock business turned out to be rocky, especially for a woman. The concert at the Bremen "Women in (e)motion festival" was such an evening

MINT JULEPS

18.10.93

The recordings made at BremenТs Schauburg have been complemented with some more recent live pieces, indispensible repertoire classics from the "Mint Julep" shaker. The "Mint Juleps" always challenge their audiences with, "You can dance to a cappella!" And thatТs just as true when the live fun comes from the record

MYERS TRIO, AMINA CLAUDIN

WOMEN IN (E)MOTION

21.07.93

Jazz, bluesТnТgospel Ц Amina Claudine Myers represents in a unique way the full spectrum of the concert series, "women in (e)motion". From the gospel tradition, to the blues legacy of Bessie Smith, to contemporary jazz forms, the music of the black pianist and singer naturally unites that which has characterized her personal career. Amina Claudine Myers does not merely present these styles side by side, rather she lets them flow into one another with varying emphasis

TRI-CONTINENTAL

TRI-CONTINENTAL

11.11.00

TRI-CONTINENTAL is nothing less than a triple word-play, first of all. On the musical geography level, the three players Bill Bourne, Lester Quitzau and Madagascar Slim (a.k.a. Ben Randriamananjara) each accentuate different styles from different musical continents: While Ben Bourne likes to draw on his Celtic and folk influences, Lester Quitzau is first and foremost a remarkably open-minded bluesman
